Success
Definition: Success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.
What does success mean to you? Where did your idea of what success is come from? What successes have you achieved in your life, we naturally bring to mind the big successes but also make a conscious effort to think of the small ones.
I think success is something we don’t value enough in our lives. I think that successes, big and small, are something we overlook because we are taught that success will give us notions about ourselves or that if we actually celebrate our successes we will start to think we are better than others. This is something we have been taught by Irish society and even more so by the catholic church and I will give you a prime example of this.
I went to mass on Christmas Eve and the only reason I agreed to go after some persuasion was because I thought I was going to hear about the nice side of Christianity like the charity shown to Mary and Joseph the night Jesus was born and maybe hear a bit about the story of St.Nicholas etc. No such luck, we listened to a half an hour litany about how success and money are false gods that we as a society worship. I could go on about this but I am not going to.
I just think it is extremely important to get to the root of where we learned our thoughts and beliefs about what we should and should not do in our lives.
What success means to me
Success is something that I never really valued much myself up until I really started looking at it when I did my Coaching diploma. And when I started to count up the different successes I have achieved especially the small ones, they really started to add up and this gave me more confidence within myself.
Success can be measured in all areas of our lives, career, relationships, skills and everything we have achieved over a lifetime.
Success to me means achieving something as little as making a to-do list and ticking stuff off on that list little by little. Or it could be something huge like talking in front of people about my work and knowing that I have had a positive impact even on one person.
Successes are an individual thing, so for a person going through a really tough time, getting out of bed to face the day might be a huge success. When you’re in a really bad mood and you don’t rip somebodies head off, that could be a success. It’s the small things we really need to look at.
When you start to count up all the things that you never looked upon as a success, they start to build and build in a really big way.
The benefits of acknowledging and celebrating your successes
Looking at your successes will grow your confidence – this is something I have tried and tested and believe me it works.
The more you look at your successes, the more success you will achieve in your life.
Looking at your successes will enable you to learn about what you can do well and what motivates you.
Celebrating your successes will make you feel good and is a guaranteed way to put you in a good mood!
Seeing how successful you really are will enable you to achieve anything you put your mind to.
Sharing your successes with other people will enable you to build connections in a way you might not have thought about before.
How to bring more success into your life
- Start looking at and thinking about the successes you have achieved over your lifetime, big and small.
- Start a success bank, get a notebook for yourself and every week or every day even if you like, write down three successes you have achieved. Remember, don’t overlook the small successes they add up to big ones!
- Instead of focusing on the amount or size of the tasks you have to do, look at how far you have come and what you have already achieved.
- When you achieve success in something, Celebrate! Tell somebody! Treat yourself and reward yourself!
